The 5th Year Anniversary of The Bayside Center for the Arts

« of 3 »

Whoa Nellie !
They say time passes faster as you get older. Well, these Facebook Memories certainly validate, if not punctuate that.
This is such a huge memory from Bayside’s past, as well as my own.
It was the start of one of the greatest events of my life.

It was FIVE years ago that I was fighting to give my childhood home of Bayside a much needed Arts Center in the middle of town, at a great location right next to the train station that would have not only made a great contribution to the lifestyle of our local community, but given Bayside’s incredibly robust Restaurant Row a little Sparkling Diamond of a Cultural Center in the middle of it to add to Bayside’s, and Bell Boulevard’s appeal and draw as a destination, and that would have resulted in a lot more cash flowing into the local cash registers.

It promised to be a very rewarding project and was starting to generate great press, praise and appreciation.

It had a growing following of people from the neighborhood who enjoyed seeing new things happen on the boulevard and now having something that fed and stimulated their minds, in deference to the blvd’s availability of great alcoholic beverages who’s side effects do not necessarily have the same effects on the brain.

It had people lingering and talking with each other after every performance or art opening, and I can’t begin to describe what it felt like, to stand witness to the unexpected and delightful consequence, of friendships being made right in front of you.

I had never really experienced that. Certainly not in such abundance and frequency. Like turning the soil in a field and suddenly having all these colorful, aromatic flowers pop up.

Well, real estate interactions took place and we lost control of the location that’s now been occupied by a business that in my estimation does little to nothing for the community nor offer the highest and best use for the location to the town or even the landlord.

It was right about this time that I met the most beautiful and vibrant woman on the Boulevard. Margarita Parlionas.

She managed a restaurant three blocks down that had this huge outdoor, beer garden type backyard that was perfect for art exhibits and events and thanks to Margarita’s vision and business savvy, we started moving the events we had been scheduling for the Art Center down to her place.

Life happens, things change, seasons pass and covid pandemics come and go,
and these things can leave an awful lot of emptiness behind.

Like the “Vacant- For Rent” sign on the door, under the “Supper Room” awning that still hangs above the entrance to her place.

But damn, if Facebook with these “Memories” doesn’t facilitate flashbacks of what were “all consuming”, heartbeat quickening potentials of things we hoped would happen,
along with the beautiful and exquisite memories of the magical things that did.

The Story of Gregg and Janet

As shared on Ann Carrozza’s Instagram account where she posted a request for stories from people who could share where generosity provided some unexpected payback.

“Here’s one of a few I could share, it’s the story of me and Janet, a very sweet little homeless woman that I’ve been helping out and watching over and sharing my time with over a few years now.

Helping her deal with a horrendous, if not broken social services system, helping her get a residence at a safe house she can go to, helping her get financial aid and identification, attaching a Gizmo Phone on my account for her that’s become a lifeline to her and also tells you where she is if she was ever in trouble, fostering her cat that isn’t allowed at the shelter, giving her a place in my home to come and stay when the transient world out there on the streets and in the world of our silent neighbors gets too frazzled, unsettling and insecure and threatens her mental stability.

Creating a little business for her called “Janet’s Thrift Shop” that I promote over my social media network that people donate clothes and electronics and housewares to that Janet organizes and sells, and being a consistent friend for her to call and count on in a life she often describes as
“being adrift on a rocky sea in the middle of a whirlwind” .

Though others thank me for what they see I do for Janet,
I never really think about what I am doing or giving with regards to her, I just do it and am there for her.

Very unanticipated blessing I have come to receive from this, is a profound intimacy and connection with God
that I never knew we could have.

In taking Janets phone calls at all kinds of crazy hours, since, like most homeless, she’s nocturnal,
and having long conversations with her over the phone
or at my house when she comes over to stay,
I have found myself trying to give her good advice and direction, and attempting to help her focus and direct her own tempest tossed thoughts and actions in ways that will be more productive and give her better chances for a happier present and future,
I have recognized the advice coming from me to her,
as being unnervingly poignant and eerily relevant to my own life, and the very advice I would be well served by heeding myself,

and now totally hear God, and the voice of my own father who’s been gone for years now, talking directly to me, through the words I share with Janet.

My life has become so enriched and I feel so blessed by God bringing this little homeless woman into my life,
to act as a medium for him to bring his words, his voice,
his wisdoms to me, as I speak them to her.

Through my friendship and caring for Janet,
I have come to feel the love of God
And have an internal conversation I never knew before.

The Face in the Bar at The Point in Montauk

So there I was in Montauk, Long Island NY at a place called “The Point”
just minding my own business, getting one of their Spicy Apple Cider Margaritas

and an order of their Jamaican Jerk Chicken wings when I got that feeling again.
You know , that feeling you get when someone is watching you.

I looked around and couldn’t spot anyone that might be the source
but then moved the plate of wings away, and there he was.
Right there next to the margarita, embedded in the bar, plain as the nose on your face.

Just look at the pictures in this gallery and you’ll see what I see.
I’m calling him “Lima”

Funniest thing is though, ever notice when they know you’ve spotted them,

they get this devilish grin on their faces .

The 2021 Golden Globe Awards

« of 2 »
It was interesting to see how they worked out producing the Golden Globes during a pandemic.
They pulled it off pretty well though, and thank God for Zoom.
Anyone who’s done a zoom call had to relate to the one award speech that had the zoom mic still on mute.
Like the recognizable phrase “You’ve Got Mail” came into the vernacular thanks to AOL.
the phrase “Unmute Your Mic” has now become ubiquitous.

Just to touch on some of the highlights for me,
I loved Jane Fonda’s staying true to herself with using the platform to make a political statement
while demonstrating a seasoned wisdom to make a statement that no-one could have a conflict with
by talking about the beauties of diversity and inclusion.

I also cheered for Anya Taylor-Joy for winning Best Actress in her category for her work on “The Queens Gambit” that I had just recently binged watched on Netflix.
I had turned on Netflix around 11:30 one night and saw the title, and knowing nothing about it decided to give it a try. Well, I found it so engaging and was so blown away by the production value and was so mesmerized by this new actress’s performance that I couldn’t stop watching.
Anya Taylor-Joy is on her way to superstardom.

Like a great book you just cant put down, every time a new episode started I just had to keep watching even when I realized the sun had started rising outside. It was 8 a.m when the last episode concluded and I finally went to get some sleep, knowing I had just watched something magnificent.

When they announced the winners and “The Queens Gambit” won multiple awards I called friends that I told about it and had no hesitation saying “I told You So” with pride in my discernment.

Though having nothing to do with the Golden Globes themselves, it was nice hearing Happy Birthday wishes being sent to Tommy Tune. I’ve included a photograph in this gallery of the freakishly tall Tommy with me and Tony Award winning producer and friend Pat Addiss at event we were at together.

There’s more commentary getting placed on the individual photographs in the gallery
but I always make a point to highlight Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban because of their inspiring romance and marriage, it gives me hope 😉

Linda Abrahms’ Monkey

Here’s two picture that my friend Linda Abrahms took. They’re a little freaky. They’re of some monkeys in a tree but when the light hits the monkeys face it does something startling and as the photo captured, a human face appeared like a hoodoo .

Take a look at what happens when the light catches the monkeys face :-D

“The Grand Canyon’s Board of Directors” AKA: “The Hoo Doos of  Grand Canyon”.

What I like the most and am most proud of is the fact that the National Parks Service Tour Guides at the Grand Canyon have been walking past this rock formation for years and never saw what I saw and never had any reason to point it out to others.

However, now that I’ve introduced them to it, they now make this vista a determined spot on the tour of the Grand Canyon and point out “The Board of Directors” to amazed tourists during their tour.

Grand Canyon Board of Directors

Here’s a wide shot of the entire Board.

Cartoon rush2

That’s the Chairman Emeritus looking to the left, with Board Member #2 butted right up against him.

Cartoon rush3

That’s Board member #2 cut off on the left with Board Member #3 , The Chairman of the Board

who looks like a dog in a Flintstones cartoon along with Board Member #4 on the right.

Cartoon rush4

Board Member #4 in the middle looks like a caricature of Jay Leno to me.

Grand Canyon Board of Directors

There are a few more board members in there that we’ll get back to. But no matter what. It doesn’t take much to start seeing what I’m seeing. BTW, these are also called “Hoo Doos” an called so by the ancient indians who saw them as spirits in the earth coming to watch over the land. Later I will be showing you The Hoo Doos of Montauk L.I
